Attendants- A Posting Option- Facebook

I have a only a few Likes on my store Facebook pages but as I have found out I really don’t need thousands as it’s my customers and their friends that I am looking for.

Let’s take my current hiring plan.

I have decided to use a Staffing Agency for a few reasons I’ll cover in another post. This post is about how to get more applicants.[read more=”Click here to Read More” less=”Read Less”]

We have positions available right now for the right people.

I have decided to take the step that I address the phone issue right from the very start. I understand the culture and use of Cell Phones but I leave mine out of the way when I work at the store and expect my employees to do the same.

The picture I used was made in PowerPoint and saved as a .jpeg. The clothes pictures are from a Royalty-Free Picture Website. These pictures are offered for free download with unlimited use. You can make a donation to the photographer (which I almost always do- $5 or $10) and also see pictures they have available for sale. Other photos in the picture are from my store.

TIP: Facebook only allows 20% text on boosted posts.

Once posted it was Boosted for $10 over 7 days. The target audience was people that like my Page and Their friends within 15 miles of the store.

It was also posted and Boosted on the Facebook pages of my two other stores.

And as expected within a few minutes I had a message ” Do I apply online or at the store?”

Our Store runs efficiently due to a set of Operation Standards that all employees are required to review and follow.  This very clearly explains, with words and pictures, step by step how to do each part of the job.

Take a minute to scroll back up and review the Job Posting. Notice how it lists the requirements and how to apply.

I’m expecting the ad itself may screen out some of the potential applicants.

Within an hour of the post there was a comment “I am interested”.

We will see how many actually follow the directions and let’s hope the staffing company will be busy on Monday.

The Prize Tub

The Prize Tub

At the Grand Opening of Washin Oxford in Oxford Alabama I was asked by the Chamber of Commerce to provide a smaller version of the ballot bin for use at Chamber events for collecting Business Cards.

I looked around for something that would work well and be a good advertising tool.

This is the original bin used at our Grand Openings, I just realized I don’t have a post detailing that promotion…stay tuned for the details. Including all of the steps and costs.

Washin Coin Laundry Ballot Drum

So after looking at a few options, including a toy washer I have used at various event presentations. This is available HERE

Electronic Toy Washer

This one would have been great but the drum was too small for more than a few business cards.

So I ended up buying a Manual Countertop Washin Machine

EasyGo Washer Mobile Hand Powered Washing Machine

Next it was off to my local graphics shop. FreeStyle Graphics. These guys are great as I can throw some ideas at them and they make the magic happen

Freestyle Graphics- Oxford AL

And what we ended up with was the Washin Coin Laundry Prize Tub.

Washin Coin Laundry Prize Tub- Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce

This tub will be used at the entrance to every monthly event and any special events where names will be collected. These include:
Business and Biscuits ( 35-60 people monthly )
          Business After Hours  ( 100- 300 people monthly )
          Various Public Events

After the first use we have decided it needs some effects when it’s being tumbled so we may add some bells to the inside that make some noise.

This is a reasonably inexpensive way to get your business in front of other business people in the community and creates a great piece for people to approach you and have a conversation.

What are some of the out of the ordinary promotions you have run?  Let me know in the comments.

Posting Notices in the Store

Posting Notices in the Store

It’s very easy to just write a sign and post it on the wall of your Laundromat. I’ve been guilty of that as well.

But taking a few minutes to order a quality frame, writing a clear message and posting it in your store keeps the professional look that you want to project to your customers.

Your customers will have more respect for your store if you show them you want to give them the best experience you can and you also have respect for them.

Buying a frame, Available Here, like the one in the picture is a very low cost for the years it will present your message to hundreds or thousands of customers. The advantage of this frame is that it screws into the wall, has a secure bolt head to allow access and locks closed.

It only takes a few  seconds to open the frame and install a new message in the future

Use a quality frame to post notices
A quality sign board, ATM and Change Machine in the Laundromat.

The next thing to consider is the message on the sign. Always avoid projecting negative messages.

Avoid words like:
        – Don’t
        – Never
        – Do Not
        – Avoid
        – Stop
– Complaint
– Problem

Keep the experience positive and it will put the customer in a better mode.

Lockable Silver Movie Poster Frame

When I printed this sign I had some font issues at the printers so it’s not exactly like I would like it to work, but as I mentioned, it’s easy to change later.

Here’s what the sign covers….

Is There Something We Can Do Better?

First – The Logo- Brand your business and put that in front of people when you can.
The address is also there so when people are calling they know where they are. This is very important if you have multiple locations.

Is there Something We Can Do better?
A question will entice people to read more of the notice.

We understand that occasionally there may be an issue with something at Washin Oxford Coin Laundry.

Notice the word “Issue”, this helps to leave the question open. Maybe people have a problem with the number of chairs, soap in the restroom, no cupcakes in the vending machine.

Please help us by providing some information.

  • Your Name
  • Your Phone number
  • Your Address (For Refunds)
  • The equipment number
  • The concern

Now we ask for some basic infomation. People that need a refund will provide more details and by adding “For Refunds” beside the Address it indicates we will be mailing the refund.

This information can be on any piece of paper and put in the Mail Slot below or
Call:            800-792-1941 Ext 1

I have had issues in the past using Refund Sheets. They get torn up, thrown around, used for note pads and occasionally for refunds and there never seems to be one when people really need it. So I let them know that any piece of paper is fine.

Before I opened my first Laundromat I set up an 800 number and over the years it has become more beneficial. It’s clearly posted on the windows of every store, as shown here you can call the refund line and leave a message. I also have Equipment Emergency Extensions, Store Directions and a line to my cell phone. If I am out of town I can redirect any of these lines to other people I have for support in the area.
I use RingCentral for this. You can check them out HERE.

WiFi Password – WashinOxford

And finally I post the WiFi Password.

Take the time to look at your signage and see what you can do to clean it up and make you store look great.

Press Release

Press Release

This morning I issued a Press Release for the new location that my company is building. Press releases are a great way to get your information out to media outlets (which includes many forms now) and could get you an interview or at least an article in a local, national or trade publication.

One thing to keep in mind is that you need to have a good Heading and Sub Heading to get people to click on your information.  Just like people searching Facebook or Google if the heading doesn’t interest you it will just roll off the screen.

To see all of the details in how I put this together the video with all of the tips will be posted in the Members Area.

Episode 36 – Community Theatre Support and Advertising

Last year during a Chamber of Commerce event I saw some flyers for a local community theater. They were offering season tickets for the upcoming shows.
As I looked at the flyer I turned to my accountant that was also there and asked if I could write it off as entertainment. Her response was it would be better as an advertising expense.

A couple of weeks later I contacted the theater group, CAST – Community Actors’ Studio Theatre, about tickets. During our discussion I found that they have another brochure that is for advertisers.

The advertising package contains various sized spots in the programme ranging from a 1/4 page business card up to a full page or the back cover. There is also information and links put on their website and some levels provide additional advertising at the event, on banners and other flyers.

But the best part is that it includes seasons tickets to the shows.

I have seen many live theater performances that vary from local groups, improve and full Broadway productions. The list includes Miss Saigon, Showboat, Lion King,  and many others. It has been a number of years since I had been to any.

One that caught my eye when I was looking at the flyer was “Oklahoma”, although I didn’t remember too much about it I do remember when I was a kid going with my Grandparents and an Uncle out for a spaghetti dinner and to see the live show in a small theater. It was an experience that I wanted to share with my own teenagers.

The other part I liked was that they were performing many recognizable shows including Spamalot,  The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, A Christmas Carol, and The complete works of William Shakespeare (abridged).

After a great season of shows and only one we could not make due to Show Choir and Dance competitions it was time for this season.

There was no hesitation about this years’ advertising. They have a great line up of performances this year.

Now to some lessons learned that you can take forward. When I met to put the ads in last year we were very rushed to put them together and get them in the first programme. Due to my delay we were almost sliding the card into the press during printing. I used a post card that I had made previously with the store information and some background graphics.

Once I got to the first show and was looking for my ad in the program I realized that the program was black and white and I actually turned the page past my own ad as it was mostly grey due to the background image.

But it was actually closer to this size in the programme

Always on the lookout for better marketing methods I started looking at the other ads to see what worked well. As it turns out one of the most noticeable smaller sized ads was for a pest control company. A very simple 1/4 page ad put in vertically Logo, Bugs listed, Location, Phone number.

They covered it in about 4 lines. This is who we are, this is what we do, here’s where we are, here’s how to contact us. Boom. Drop The Mic.

I also realized that I needed to target the potential customer that will be holding the programme. A simple ad for a Coin Laundry may bring back bad memories of their first apartment or a college laundromat.

At this point we are still working on the layout of the new ad but it will be black and white.  Logo, What we do, Where we are and how to get a hold of us.

 My thoughts right now are:

I would love your thoughts on a catchy ad and to hear about other non-traditional ads you have run.

I’ll see you at the show

 http://www.castalabama.com/

UPDATE:

I was at the first show last week with my wife, two daughters and two of their friends and found our ad in the program. Much better than last year and a better placing on the page.

On another note my daughters and their friends had a fantastic time. They are all 15 and when ever I glanced over it was great to see them so focused on the show.

Exposing kids and teens to live theater has an impact you may not see for years but with the cost of a local show about the same price as a movie and snacks I’ll take the support of local talent any day. And who knows maybe your kids will see someone at the Academy Awards one day and be able to say they saw them at a local theater “back in the day“.

Is Your Website Mobile Friendly?

Is Your Website Mobile Friendly?

Google’s new mobile rule, which will drop your website from the mobile search results if your website isn’t mobile friendly, goes into effect on April 21.

The clock is ticking! It’s time to assess the status of your website.

If you’re not sure whether or not your website is mobile compatible, just click for the Google Mobile Friendly Test, plug in your URL, and find out.

On April 21st, 2015, if your website isn’t mobile-friendly (meaning that it’s easy to navigate and interact with on a mobile device) Google is going to drop the hammer on you. That means that when someone does a Google search on a mobile device, your website will be dropped to the bottom of the search results.

Data Talks

Now, why would Google do something like this? Because when data talks, Google listens. And data is talking loud. Like, for example, the fact that 80% of online adults own a smartphone, or that mobile traffic officially accounts for over 60% of all website traffic.

There’s also the fact that Google is the most popular and powerful search engine in the world, owning nearly 70% of the total search market and an astounding 87% of the mobile search market.

Those are some impressive numbers, and Google doesn’t want to see them drop. That’s why their number one goal is, and always has been, providing the best possible user experience to anyone who comes across their infamous search box.  This new rule is just the next step in attaining that goal.

To put it simply, Google sees a majority of the Internet population connecting to the web on a mobile device, so they’re changing the rules to cater to those users. Therefore, you need a mobile compatible website by April 21st, or a big chunk of the Internet population will never even know you exist.

So use the link Google provides to check all of your websites

Google Mobile Friendly Test

There’s still time…..

Simple Laundromat / Coin Laundry Marketing Tip

Simple Laundromat / Coin Laundry Marketing Tip

There are all kinds of marketing methods but sometimes you just have to do something simple and just tell people what to do.

A few years ago I was trying to determine a method to increase my Drop Off Comforter business.

Although there is some fluctuation between months and some changes to the customer list, by providing a professional service in a timely manner we have a developed solid Drop Off customer base.

As many Laundromat and Small Business Owners already know you don’t have to settle with splitting up the pie if you can make it bigger.

So the target was comforters.

I worked with a local graphics company to make  up a two sided banner and put it out by the road.

For the next few days there was no noticeable change in the Drop Off traffic but then a got a call from my attendant asking what we were going to do with all of the comforters.

See for the first couple of days people noticed the sign as they drove past, then they finally made a mental note to grab that comforter in the morning and drop it off on the way to work.

So we had to use some empty pails and plywood to make some quick shelves so we could stack the abundance of comforters. This also allows up to easily move the shelves out of the way when we need to.

One thing you will find is that as much as you can tell your customers it will be ready that afternoon, or they say they will pick it up the next morning, it will probably be a few days before they come back.

We always make sure to get a phone number on comforter Drop Offs, clothes aren’t as bad and they don’t take up as much space if someone does forget.

The next year I put the sign in the same place and was told to move it by the By-Law Officer. My parking lot goes right to the edge of the power poles which is there reference point for signs.

For that year I hung the sign on the front of the building and although visible wasn’t the “eye catcher” that I needed on a busy road by a stop light.

So this year I checked the “reference points” of the power poles and found a spot on the grass at the corner of the lot just inside the wires.

Using an app on my phone called PicPlayPost I was able to combine a picture of my overhead sign with a video of my “Spring Cleaning Tip”

Next I used this video on the Washin Golden Springs Coin Laundry Facebook page and after receiving about 40 views I boosted the post for the next 5 days.

The demographic I used was women between 40 and 60 who like the local newspaper. Picking demographics can be the hard part if you have a small “like” base on your Facebook page but as I was making the pie bigger I wanted to reach a different audience so I skipped “people who Like my page and their friends”

We are only a few days into this promotion so I will continue to monitor the Facebook results and store activity and determine if I want to continue.

     Cost breakdown:

Original sign was about $140, 4 years ago.
Orange barrels- free from behind my store.
A piece of some 1/2″ conduit and some tye wraps.
PicPlayPost app- Free,
and $20 in Facebook ads.

Do you have any simple marketing tips that we could share?

Post them in the comments and share this post with others.

Incorporate Typography with Photography

   Incorporate Typography with Photography

Getting your information out through Social Media is made easier with pictures and words.
It’s easy to share and get interaction.

This article covers some of the methods to put them together without looking like it was just typed on the picture.

As I am not very good at this type of overlay and I don’t run photoshop I like that he included a method in Powerpoint.

The Right Way to Incorporate Typography with Photography
By Scott Schwertly

By now you’ve probably heard time and time again that photos have more impact than text, and are (hopefully!) pairing your text with images in presentations. Now, it’s time to take things one step further to maximize your use of photography in slides.

Here are few simple rules to take your presentations to the next level:

Add An Extra Layer

An easy way to spruce up a presentation is to place your text on top of a beautiful, full bleed photograph. However, this can be problematic when using a full-color photograph due to all the different colors in the photo. If the photograph is saturated with light colors, light text might get too washed out, but dark text might contrast too much and look odd. An easy solution is to add a translucent color overlay to the photo, and then add the text. This adds enough contrast for the text to standout, while still allowing for an interesting, engaging background photo.

This can be done in PowerPoint by simply adding a shape on top of a photo, making the shape a dark color (black works well), placing it where you want your text to go, and then increasing the transparency of the shape so that you can still see the image underneath.

Here’s a sample.

Make the Words Part of the Scene

Another great way to use typography is to add it to a photograph in a way that makes it seem like part of the scene. This is a little advanced and best accomplished in Photoshop, but it yields some amazing results. Simply find an image you would like to use (preferably one with a definite foreground and background), and then add your text and place it onto an item in the foreground, as if it’s peeking out of the object. Next, erase the area that overlaps the foreground object. This hides that section of text and makes it seems like the text is behind the foreground object and in front of the background.

It should look something like this when you are done:

It’s All About Perspective

Another way to incorporate text into your photo is by using the perspective tool in Photoshop. This allows you to adjust the text in a way that makes it seem as if it’s being viewed from the angle of the camera, not just flat on the screen. If you have Photoshop, this is an easy one. Once you’ve chosen your photo, just add your text, select it in the Layer Panel, right click the layer and convert the text to a Smart Object. With the Text Object selected, go to Edit > Transform > Perspective (or use shortcut command+T) then just grab a corner and drag it until the text is positioned in your desired perspective. It’s that simple.

You should then have something similar to this example:
